Superken7 has released Free the WADs which is a DOS application for region patching WAD files. This was a test release but there appears to be no problems with it and it works fine (tested by Wii.DS-Scene staff members)

the first, UNTESTED, windows build. any brave windows testers, please confirm
if this is working using freethewads.exe

usage: just run freethewads.exe target.wad <- This will patch to region free
or: freethethewads.exe target.wad poopie <- This will let you chose which region you want (Actually, you can write anything as the second argument, not just poopie)

I tested this yesterday with Mario 64 NTSC-U iND release and region patched it to region free. It worked fine on my PAL Wii, also the game runs at full screen 60hz which faster and smoother than than the optimized PAL Mario 64.

It wont work on all games though, i tried to region free Star Fox 64 NTSC-U. It installed fine but the game was still running at 50hz and sound was skipping.

Use a batch file?

CD WHERE_YOUR_WADS_ARE
FOR %%F IN (*.wad) DO (
PATH_TO_FREETHEWADSfreethewads.exe %%F
)

Written in 0.3s - so I may have arsed up the syntax... try it on a copy first :D

I just used this to convert a Sonic 3 PAL WAD for use on an American Wii, and it worked just fine. A tad weird seeing the Sega Mega Drive logo next to all my Genesis games though. XD Also, the game runs a bit faster than normal, though I assume there's nothing that can be done about that?

hello all im tring to use this freethewads program but the only things i found a tutorial on te net i followed it  but it seems to be floored or maybe im not doing something correctly.im going to post the directions i followed also  am using vista i dont know if thats the problem or not but if someone can help id be very happy it seems like a great program if i can get it together:

Step 1: Create a folder on the root of C: (name it temp for arguments sake)

Step 2: Put the freethewads.exe, the cygcrypto-0.9.8.dll, the cygwin1.dll and the wad you want to 'free' into that folder

Step 3: Open Command Prompt

Step 4: Type cd C:\Temp\ hit enter

Step 5: Type freethewads title.wad a

Step 6: Choose a region ('3' is free)

Step 7: Confirm it y/n

That's it

but the thing is i get up to the point i put in the info from step 5 and i put this exactly:
c:\temp \freethewads lostwinds.wad a

then rom there it should launch the program freethewads im guessing but what i get is:
cannot open the file freethewads
thank you so much as i have lost my mind messing with cmd anyone how can help please do anyone who has a real tutorial please post

you're doing it wrong

type freethewads.exe lostwinds.wad poopie

then prees 3 and hit enter

then type y and hit enter.

by the way why are you trying to region free that lost winds game, it's NTSC-U right?
Seeing as you are in the USA i would have thought you have a NTSC-U Wii so theres no need to region patch that game. Do you have a Japanese Wii or something?
