I bought a modded / chipped Wii from a market.

No problems ( so far )

I then purchased some copied games from the same market, but when I try to play them it comes up with the system update message and I bit scared to action this due to the scare stories I have heard.

When I purchased the Wii - the guy said NEVER to select system update on NTSC discs - how do I know if these are NTSC discs or not - even if thet are not - is it safe to update?

The problem is I dont know with which chip the Wii has been modded with.

What do I do?  I have a load of games that I currently unable to play with.

Your help would be most appreciated

Which system menu version are you using? You can see this at the top right of the wii settings. Something like 3.2 E

Cheers for the reply.  I will check it out kater today ( just getting ready for work )

One quick question - do you HAVE to do the updates to play the games?  No way of overriding it?  What would happen if someone had these games but did'nt have Wi-Fi access?

Menu verion is 3.3e

I currently purchased Fifa 10, Tiger Woods 10 and a few other newies and everyone asks for a system update when I put the disc in

Would it be safe to update via wi-fi with no disc in?

Your best bet is to update to 4.1 (using waninkokos installer) then install preloader and use the hacks to block updates. Before doing any of this, you should install bootmii (as boot2 if possible) and run a backup of your NAND. There are plenty of threads available for this, just do a search for bootmii and you should find many discussions about it. Make sure to select "search entire post" as only titles are searched by default.

Wow sounds complicated.

I have done a search on bootmii, cant really find a step by step guide.  From the above it seems I put the Hackmii installer & the firmware updater unzipped into the SD card?  I presume when the Wii is switched off, then just swich on and follwo the instructions?

Are they the only 2 files I need?  The Hackmii installer does not have any files in the folder named NAND?

Or do I follow the installer for this:  http://www.mediafire.com/?q2iy0zgz2my (07-22-2009)which is mentioned on one of the forums ( by yourself )for installing 4.1

I tried following the instructions for the above and ran the prepare file ( typing in 448 - for v4.1 ) but all I got was BAD files.  Dont really want to put these on my SD cards as they sound incorrect

Use bannerbomb to run the hackmii installer to install bootmii and the HBC:

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/BaNNeRBoMB
http://bootmii.org/download/

Do a backup of your NAND in bootmii then you can then install Waninkoko's 4.1 updater to update to 4.1 and then install preloader:

http://wii.ds-scene.net/?s=download&viewfile=3d1fd987cbfa69ee30f84e03d3c123b1
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader

Make sure to use the correct hacks.ini file with preloader for 4.1:

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader/hacks#Systemmenu_4.1

You can then turn on block updates, get region free gaming and get the added functionality of the Wii System Menu 4.1. Also you now have bootmii installed (and got yourself a NAND backup) so your Wii is pretty much resistant to getting any bricks ;)

Running the hackmii installer with bannerbomb will enable you to install the homebrew channel (HBC).
